Every few weeks a homeowner in Gilbert or Chandler asks us whether they should tear out their cement grout and replace it with epoxy. It is a fair question, because epoxy genuinely does not absorb stains the way cement does. It is also a question with a real cost attached, and in most of the homes we walk into the answer is no. Here is the comparison as a restoration company sees it, including the parts installers rarely mention.
What Each Material Actually Is
Cement grout is a Portland cement based mortar with sand and pigment. It cures with an open pore structure, which is why it absorbs water, oils, and dissolved minerals from Arizona tap water. Epoxy grout is a two part resin and hardener system with a filler. It cures into a dense, essentially non-porous plastic. That single difference in porosity drives every other tradeoff between them.

Where Epoxy Genuinely Wins
- Shower floors and mosaic pans, where constant moisture and body soil punish cementitious joints
- Kitchen backsplashes behind a cooktop, where grease is the primary staining agent
- Commercial restrooms and food prep areas, where sanitation cycles use aggressive chemistry daily
- Pool decks and wet edges where chlorinated water sits in the joint
Where Epoxy Goes Wrong
Epoxy has a short working window. An installer who is not fluent in it leaves a thin cured film across the tile face, and that haze is one of the most common problems we are called in to remove. On textured porcelain and natural stone, removing cured epoxy haze is slow, mechanical work. Epoxy is also unforgiving to repair. When a joint cracks from slab movement, a patch rarely matches, because you cannot blend cured resin the way you can feather cementitious grout.

The Option Most Homeowners Should Consider First
Removing existing cement grout to install epoxy means grinding out every joint in the floor, which is dusty, slow, and risks chipping tile edges. It costs substantially more than restoration, and it is irreversible. Color sealing achieves the practical outcome most people actually want, which is a non-absorbent, uniform, stain-resistant joint, by bonding a pigmented membrane over the existing grout.
