Vinegar is the single most common cause of ruined travertine showers in Arizona. It removes the scale and dissolves the calcium in the stone at the same time. The dull white patch left behind is not a stain, it is a physically etched surface that only diamond honing can repair.
What Homeowners Can Safely Do on Tile and Glass
- Test in a hidden corner first, always, even on tile you believe is porcelain
- Use a purpose-made acidic descaler rather than a household acid, apply it to a damp surface, and keep the dwell short
- Agitate with a white nylon pad, never a green scour pad, and never on polished or coated surfaces
- Rinse thoroughly, then dry the surface completely, because the rinse water is itself hard water
- Repeat two mild passes instead of one long aggressive one, which protects grout joints and caulk
Why It Comes Back So Fast
Every shower here leaves a thin mineral film after each use. Once scale has bonded and been removed, the surface it leaves behind is microscopically rougher and grabs the next layer faster. That is the cycle homeowners describe as the shower getting worse every year. Breaking it requires two things: restoring the surface profile, and adding a barrier so the minerals cannot key in.
The Professional Process

When the Stain Is Not Hard Water

- A cloudy haze that does not respond to descaler on stone, which is etching, not deposit
- Uniform darkening in the joint only, which is soil in an open pore and calls for restoration rather than descaling
