# Natural Stone Shower Restoration in Arizona

Marble, travertine, limestone, slate, and stone mosaic showers restored in place. We remove hard water scale and etching, refinish the stone, rebuild failed grout joints, and permanently color seal them so you never pay to seal your shower grout again.

A stone shower is the single hardest working surface in an Arizona home. Hard water, acidic cleaners, and constant moisture attack the stone and the grout at the same time. Cleaning alone cannot fix that. Etching is damage that has to be re-cut, and eroded joints have to be rebuilt before anything gets sealed.

## Real Stone Shower Projects

Marble, travertine, and stone mosaic showers we restored across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale.

![Before and after of a travertine shower in Scottsdale AZ with darkened eroded grout joints, a dingy decorative border and a hard water filmed bench restored to a bright uniform honed finish by Lazona Tile Care](/__l5e/assets-v1/67d3a4bc-2508-4138-994a-cfd6feba9e4b/travertine-shower-bench-restoration-scottsdale.jpg)

Travertine Bench Shower Restoration - Scottsdale, AZ Years of hard water film and eroded, permanently darkened grout made this diagonal travertine shower look dirty no matter how it was scrubbed. We ground the eroded joints with 100 grit and lower, rebuilt them with epoxy, cleaned the decorative border by hand, honed the walls and bench back to an even finish, then color sealed every joint so it never needs sealing again.

Slate Hex Floor Color Restoration - Tempe, AZ Hard water had bleached the slate grey and washed the joints out. Erosion removed, then a color enhancing seal restored a deep uniform black.

## What Is Natural Stone Shower Restoration?

Natural stone shower restoration is the mechanical refinishing of the stone plus full repair and sealing of the grout system. On a typical Lazona job that means stripping mineral scale and soap film, honing out etch marks and dull spots with diamond abrasives, filling travertine pits, cutting out and rebuilding cracked or eroded grout joints, replacing failed caulk at every change of plane, then applying a permanent pigmented grout color seal and a penetrating stone seal. Most showers are finished in one day.

The difference between us and a cleaning company is simple. A cleaner leaves the shower clean and still damaged, the same way a stain stays visible on a freshly washed shirt. Restoration removes the damage and caps the grout permanently, backed by our 15-Year Warranty.

## Every Stone Behaves Differently

We identify the stone before we touch it. The wrong pad, the wrong chemical, or the wrong grit ruins a stone shower faster than years of neglect.

### Marble

What goes wrong: Etching, dull spots, hard water film, soap scum burn

How we fix it: Diamond honing through a controlled grit sequence, then polishing to your chosen finish (matte, satin, or high polish)

### Travertine

What goes wrong: Open pits, spalling, powdery grout, water absorption

How we fix it: Hole filling with color matched fill, honing flat, then a penetrating stone seal plus permanent grout color sealing

### Limestone

What goes wrong: Etching, staining from shampoo and body oils, soft surface wear

How we fix it: Gentle honing to remove damage, stain drawing where needed, then sealing to slow absorption

### Slate & Quartzite

What goes wrong: Flaking layers, mineral crust, faded color

How we fix it: Deep mineral removal, delamination repair, color enhancing seal to restore depth

### Granite

What goes wrong: Hard water film on walls, dull benches and curbs

How we fix it: Mineral stripping and mechanical polishing on walls, benches, curbs, and niches

### Stone Mosaic & Pebble

What goes wrong: Grout heavy surface, eroded joints, standing water and odor

How we fix it: Joint rebuild, full regrout where required, then permanent grout color sealing across every joint

## Why Arizona Hard Water Takes Over Stone Showers

East Valley tap water runs 15 to 20+ grains per gallon. Every time a stone shower dries, that calcium and magnesium is left behind on the stone face and inside the grout joints. On its own that is a film. Combine it with the four things nearly every shower we inspect in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Paradise Valley is missing and it becomes structural damage:

- No proper sealer, or a clear big box sealer that rinsed away in months, so water and minerals soak straight into the stone and grout.
- Poor ventilation. A fan that runs five minutes, or none at all, leaves the enclosure damp for hours and feeds mold and biofilm in every joint.
- Wrong maintenance products. Vinegar, bleach, tub and tile acids, and abrasive pads chemically burn calcium based stone every single use.
- Wrong cleaning timing. Waiting until buildup is visible means the minerals have already crystallized and bonded to the surface.

These issues compound. Mineral buildup holds moisture, moisture keeps the stone saturated, saturated stone softens, and softened stone gives up its surface. That end stage is not staining and it is not dirt. It is all out erosion.

## Erosion vs. Etching: Not the Same Damage

Almost every quote a homeowner gets confuses these two. They require completely different grits, time, and budget, so knowing which one you have tells you what your shower actually needs.

### Etching

A shallow chemical burn. An acid, a shampoo, or a hard water deposit dissolved the very top of the polish, leaving dull rings, drip marks, and cloudy patches. The stone is still flat and structurally intact.

How it is corrected: higher grit work only, typically starting at 200 to 400 grit diamond and stepping up through the polishing sequence. No rebuilding required.

### Erosion

Material loss. The stone surface has washed away in waves, pits have opened, edges have spalled, and grout joints sit below the tile face. You can feel erosion with your hand. Etching you can only see.

How it is corrected: aggressive metal bond diamond at 100 grit or lower to cut past the eroded layer and re-establish a flat plane, then a full honing sequence back up. Where erosion has gone too deep to grind out inside your budget, we use epoxies and color matched fills to rebuild the missing material before refinishing.

Budget matters here, and we are honest about it. A heavily eroded stone shower can be taken to three different levels: cut it flat and hone it uniform, cut and rebuild with epoxy where material is gone, or full grit sequence with epoxy rebuild plus a polished finish. We show you the difference on your own stone and quote each level so you decide, not us.

## What a Full Stone Shower Restoration Includes

### Mineral & scale removal

Crystallized calcium stripped from stone, grout, and glass without acid washing the stone.

### Erosion grinding (100 grit or lower)

Metal bond diamonds cut past the eroded surface layer to re-establish a flat, sound plane.

### Epoxy & fill rebuild

Color matched epoxies and fills rebuild spalled edges, open travertine pits, and missing material.

### Honing sequence

Step by step grit progression up from the cutting grit to remove every scratch pattern below it.

### Polishing to your finish

Matte, satin, or high polish. Powder polishing on marble and limestone for a true reflective finish.

### Mold & biofilm treatment

Growth in joints, corners, and under old caulk is treated at the source, not painted over.

### Neutralization

Every chemical is neutralized and rinsed so nothing keeps working on the stone after we leave.

### Controlled drying

Air movers dry the assembly fully before sealing. Sealing a damp shower is how sealers fail.

### Silicone replacement

Failed caulk removed at every change of plane and replaced with mildew resistant silicone.

### Drain cleaning & weep holes

Drain body cleaned and clogged weep holes cleared so water leaves the pan instead of sitting in it.

### Grout repair & regrout

Cracked, powdery, and eroded joints cut out and rebuilt before anything is sealed.

### Permanent grout color sealing

Pigmented color seal caps the joints, backed by our Never Seal Again promise and 15-Year Warranty.

## Our Stone Shower Protocol

### 1\. Stone identification and damage map

We confirm the stone type, test a small area, and document etching, mineral scale, cracked joints, failed caulk, hollow tile, and any leak risk before we quote.

### 2\. Mineral and soap film stripping

Stone safe chemistry and controlled agitation lift hard water scale, shampoo residue, and body oil out of the stone and the grout joints.

### 3\. Honing and polishing

Diamond abrasives cut through etch marks and wear patterns in sequence, then we finish to matte, satin, or high polish to match the rest of the bathroom.

### 4\. Repair and regrout

Eroded and cracked joints are cut out and rebuilt, travertine pits are filled, loose or broken pieces are re-bonded or replaced, and all changes of plane are re-caulked. Repair work starts at a $500 minimum.

### 5\. Permanent color seal and stone seal

Grout joints get a pigmented permanent color seal that is non porous and warrantied 15 years. The stone itself gets a penetrating seal suited to its porosity.

### 6\. Care handoff

You get the pH neutral cleaner guidance and a written warranty. No annual resealing, no clear sealer that mops away in a year.

## Stone Shower Pricing

Stone showers are quoted per shower because stone type, size, and damage level all move the number. What is fixed:

- Repair minimum $500. Any tile, stone, or grout repair visit starts at $500 regardless of how small the area is.
- Full stone shower restoration typically starts around $1,500 including cleaning, refinishing, regrout where needed, and permanent color sealing.
- Written quote before we start. Send photos for a virtual estimate within 24 hours.
- 15-Year Warranty on grout color sealing, with our Never Seal Again promise.

Trip charges apply outside Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, and Tempe. See the [full pricing guide](/pricing).

We schedule natural stone shower restoration across Camelback, Mummy Mountain, Clearwater Hills and Cheney Estates, confirm the substrate and the failure mode before we quote, and back the grout color sealing portion of every job with our 15-Year Warranty.

Hard water is the common thread in every East Valley stone shower we touch. Mineral scale dulls the stone, acidic cleaners etch it, and the grout joints erode until water finds the substrate. Our stone shower crews pair diamond polishing with grout repair, tile repair, and a warrantied sealer install so the shower stays finished.

## Natural Stone Shower Questions

### Can a natural stone shower be restored instead of replaced?

In almost every case, yes. A full stone shower tear out and rebuild in the East Valley runs $8,000 to $25,000 and takes weeks. Restoration refinishes the stone you already own, rebuilds the failed grout joints, and permanently color seals them, typically in one to two days for a fraction of replacement cost.

### Why does my marble shower look cloudy and dull?

Marble is calcium based, so acidic shower cleaners, vinegar, and hard water minerals chemically etch the surface. Etching is physical damage, not dirt, so no cleaner will fix it. The polish has to be mechanically re-cut with diamond abrasives and then repolished.

### Do you seal the grout in a natural stone shower?

Yes. We repair failed joints first, then apply a permanent pigmented color seal that makes the grout non porous. It carries our Never Seal Again promise and 15-Year Warranty, so you are not reapplying a clear sealer every year that mops and rinses away.

### Will my travertine shower stop feeling rough and powdery?

Travertine has natural voids that open up as water erodes the fill. We fill the pits with color matched material, hone the surface flat, and seal it, which removes the rough gritty feel and stops the powdery residue.

### Can you remove hard water stains from stone shower walls and glass?

Yes. We strip mineral scale from stone, grout, and glass. Where hard water has already etched into the glass or the stone surface, we mechanically polish the damage out rather than just cleaning over it.

### How long does a natural stone shower restoration take?

Most single showers are completed in one working day. Showers needing extensive regrouting, tile replacement, or a heavy grit sequence on the stone are scheduled over two days, with 24 hours of no use afterward while the seal cures.

### What does a natural stone shower restoration cost in Arizona?

Stone showers are quoted per shower after we see the stone type, size, and damage level. Repair work carries a $500 minimum regardless of size, and full stone shower restoration typically starts around $1,500. You get a written quote before any work begins.

### Do you charge for a natural stone test spot or consultation?

Yes. Natural stone requires a physical test spot to confirm the correct grit sequence, chemistry, and final finish, so all stone test spots and on-site consultations carry a $150 fee. That $150 is applied directly toward your total when you move forward with the restoration.

### Which cleaners are safe on a natural stone shower?

Only pH neutral, stone safe cleaners. Skip vinegar, bleach, tub and tile acids, and abrasive pads or melamine erasers. Those are the top three causes of the etched, dull stone showers we get called out to repair in Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa.

Material Intelligence

## Every Surface In Arizona Fails Differently. We Diagnose Before We Touch It.

Anyone can rent a machine and spray a sealer. Restoration is a materials science problem: what the stone is made of, what our water and sun do to it, and which grit or chemistry brings it back without shortening its life. Here is the reference table our crews work from on every East Valley job.

Material properties, Arizona-specific failure modes and Lazona restoration protocols

Material

Hardness / porosity

How it fails here

Our protocol

Travertine

Mohs 3 to 4 (calcite)

Open vugs fill with hard water scale, then spall at the edges

Fill voids with color-matched polyester, hone at 400 grit, seal with an impregnator

Marble & limestone

Mohs 3 (calcite)

Acid etching from citrus, softener salt and shampoo pooling

100 grit only when erosion is present, then 400 to 3000 grit polish to the original finish

Granite & quartzite

Mohs 6 to 7

Sealer failure around sinks, rust bleed at anchor points, dull seams

Diamond re-polish, epoxy seam rebuild, sink remount, solvent-based impregnator

Porcelain & ceramic

Mohs 7 to 8 glaze

Grout absorbs pigment permanently while the tile itself stays perfect

Deep clean, repair, then pigmented epoxy color seal so the grout never absorbs again

Saltillo & terracotta

Soft, high porosity

Yellowed acrylic topical wax that cracks and traps dirt under the coating

Full strip of the old coating, neutralize, rebuild with breathable finish coats

Slate & flagstone

Mohs 3 to 5, cleft face

UV bleaching and delamination on pool decks and patios

Low-pressure deep clean, flake removal, color-enhancing sealer rated for exterior sun

### East Valley Water Hardness, City By City

Anything above 10 grains per gallon is classified very hard. Every city we serve sits well past that line, which is why scale returns on showers and why unsealed grout turns gray again within months.

### The Standards We Build To

- **TCNA Handbook** movement joint and substrate guidance, which is how we prove whether hollow tile is an installation defect or normal wear.
- **ANSI A108 and A118** bonding and grout specifications for every repair and re-set we perform.
- **Natural Stone Institute** finish classifications so a honed floor leaves honed and a polished floor leaves polished.
- **Our own 15-Year Warranty**, which is the only reason we refuse shortcuts other companies sell as savings.
